Staring down the rabbit hole

We have had an incredible summer! Ari started 4-point crawling, walking, cruising, eating solid foods again and has 4 new teeth. How is that for an incredible recovery! Here he is on day 2 of walking several weeks ago. I just happened to get lucky and catch this.

He’s even more impressive now. He’s doing great with all his therapies and is his normal funny wonderful self.

With one exception.

Since he left the hospital at the end of May, he’s had 3 ear infections and we recently learned both of the ear tubes they put in have fallen out. So we are looking at chronic ear infections with pain and hearing loss all winter (which of course impacts physical and speech development) or getting new tubes. His doctor recommended the latter.

He has surgery on Friday.

I should have written much earlier. Just a lot going on and frankly, I think I just didn’t want to think about it. I do much better when I don’t have to talk about things that scare me.

In theory, he should not have the complications with this surgery that were so devastating last time. The surgery in May involved getting his adenoids out and his throat scoped, in addition to getting ear tubes put in, and those things required IV anesthesia and a breathing tube. On Friday, he will get gas anesthesia only and no breathing tube. Altogether the procedure should take 10 minutes.

We are very hopeful his outcome will be different this time. He did well with basic ear tube surgery 2 years ago when he was just 10 months old. We are praying for a repeat performance.

Please keep Ari in your thoughts and prayers Friday morning. Surgery will be in the 9 am hour. I’ll update once we get back home.

Love to all,
Dorothy
